Le réalisateur mexicain Alejandro González Iñárritu sera le Président du Jury du Festival de Cannes dont la 72e édition se tiendra en mai prochain.
« Dès le début de ma carrière, le Festival de Cannes a été important pour moi, a déclaré le cinéaste. Je suis honoré et ravi d’y revenir cette année, et immensément fier de présider le Jury. Le cinéma coule dans les veines de la planète et ce Festival en est le cœur. Avec le jury, nous aurons le privilège d’être les premiers spectateurs des nouveaux films de nos collègues cinéastes venus du monde entier. C’est un véritable plaisir et une grande responsabilité, que nous assumerons avec passion et dévouement. »
De leur côté, Pierre Lescure, Président du Festival de Cannes, et Thierry Frémaux, Délégué général, se réjouissent que le cinéaste ait répondu à leur invitation :
« Il est très rare qu’Alejandro G. Iñárritu accepte de participer à un jury et c’est la première fois que le Jury du Festival de Cannes sera présidé par un artiste mexicain. Cannes est le lieu de tous les cinémas, et à travers la présence de l’auteur de Babel, c’est tout le cinéma mexicain que le Festival célébrera. »

Alejandro G. Iñárritu succèdera à Cate Blanchett, Présidente de la 71e édition du Festival de Cannes dont le jury a attribué la Palme d’or à Une affaire de famille du réalisateur japonais Kore-eda Hirokazu.
Le Festival de Cannes 2019 se déroulera du mardi 14 au samedi 25 mai prochains.
